Does the In Home Display (IHD) only function when PAYG+ is set up and 'can't connect to meters' message disappears?

I have had my smart meters installed today, and I have a question about the in home display unit.
I'm happy waiting until the meters connect, but the display unit is showing the same info from when it was initially switched on. Will this not function until the meters are communicating and the account is all set up correctly?

So your In Home Display (IHD) needs to be 'linked up' with your smart meters first. To get this done, it's best to call us when at home: 0330 102 7517.

When this is done, the IHD will connect separate to online PAYG+ account. Remember that you won't be able to see your balance on the IHD as this will all be online: https://forum.boostpower.co.uk/smart-payg-5/what-s-the-difference-between-payg-and-smart-payg-standard-and-which-one-s-right-for-me-12.
