You probably recognise the phrases 3G and 4G from your mobile phone, but we could soon see 5G hitting your screens in the near future!
So what is 5G exactly? It's the next (fifth) generation of mobile internet connectivity promising much faster data download and upload speeds, wider coverage and more stable connections.
But why do we need this? Well, slowly but surely the world is going ‘mobile’ and the existing spectrum bands we use become congested when everyone is connected and streaming music and videos at the same time. 5G will be better at handling having thousands of devices connected at once.
It’ll even be faster than current networks. In theory, a 5G connection should allow you to download a whole HD movie in about 10 seconds. This is going to require a whole new infrastructure of cellular masts, as it’ll use a different frequency to the existing 3G and 4G networks.
Unfortunately the upgrade may not mean remote or rural areas finally get some service, as it’s a high frequency band best suited for short distances. However, as older models on 3G or 4G won’t be compatible, it may be a perfect excuse to get a new phone!
What do you guys think? Sick of slow internet connection of your mobile? Ready for an upgrade?
