It's interesting to think that we rely on electricity so much in our day to day lives, and sometimes all we need to do is flick a switch or turn on a plug to get instant energy! But, where does this electricity come from and how is it made? Why does that matter?
The term Renewable Energy is something that gets thrown around a lot these days, but how do we know whats a green way of making electricity and what isn't. Well, here's a fun little description of some of the more popular way renewable electricity is made:
Wind power is one of the more well known ways of how to make renewable electricity.
Wind power or wind energy is the use of air flow through wind turbines to provide the mechanical power to turn electric generators and traditionally to do other work, like milling or pumping. Wind power is a sustainable and renewable alternative to burning fossil fuels, and has much less effect on the environment.
You may have seen a load of these all over the roofs of peoples houses, maybe yours even has some on already! Solar energy is another one of those popular ways to make renewable electricity power.
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics,solar thermal energy, solar architecture, molten saltpower plants and artificial photosynthesis.
Here's a method that most people might be unfamiliar with...
Biofuels are designed to replace gasoline, diesel fuel and coal, which are called “fossil fuels” because they are made from animals and plants that died millions of years ago. Biofuels are made mostly from plants that have just been harvested. There are three main types of biofuel. Ethanol, biodiesel, and biojet fuel.
And what bout this method?
Geothermal energy is the heat from the Earth. It's clean and sustainable. Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the Earth's surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten rock called magma.
And finally, we have one of the more interesting ways to make electricity, using water (and lots of it!)
This is called hydroelectric power or hydropower. The most common type of hydroelectric power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir. Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity.
